NO LANGUAGE, NO IDENTITY
47 years ago, in 1971, 36 people started working on the Okrika (Kirike) Bible translation project in Nigeria. Only eight of them survived to see the full Bible launched in March 2018.

“If it were possible to see inside my heart, you would see how happy I am that we finally have our Bible,” said King Acheseimimie Frank, one of the traditional rulers of the Okrika people in Rivers State, southern Nigeria. “Without your language you have no identity.”

The new Bible will not only help preserve the Okrika language but will also help preachers, according to Rev Tamuno Kingsley, who described how difficult it had been to preach in Okrika without the complete Bible.

Help unlock God’s message this Christmas

Did you know that about half of the world’s languages are without even one book of the Bible? Indeed over 3,500 of the world’s 7,097 languages do not have a single Scripture translation.

Translation is a vital part of Bible work; because of translation, many of the people of world can read the Bible – originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek –in their own language. By making the Bible understandable, God’s Word can be shared in a meaningful and affirming way. And through Bible translation, people will also read and hear the story of Jesus’ birth – for the first time – in the language that speaks to their heart.

The Canadian Bible Society (CBS) is involved in various translation projects for indigenous and diaspora communities in Canada. Some of these projects take years to complete and require the help of many local translators and Bible experts. But when the Bible is completed, there is great celebration in the communities.

This Christmas, help give access to God’s Word in people’s heart language with your special gift for Bible translation work. With your gift today, you will also help provide a Bible to someone in their own language. Here’s what your support can do:

• $30 will bless a tribe with a Scripture verse in their heart language.

• $50 will enable CBS to continue translations in the indigenous languages of Canada.

• $100 will expedite more translations around the world.

Your special gift sent today will give someone God’s Word, wrapped in His Love that will live forever.
