Queen Elizabeth Deaf and Hard of Hearing Scholarship and Program Enhancement Fund

Queen Elizabeth High School is special, not only because it’s the only grade 7-12 school in the Calgary Board of Education, but because of its whole-school approach to learning. The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students are an integral part of the overall school culture and community, so when the opportunity came to provide scholarship awards for these students, the school community was on board. The number of students in the DHH program with a high desire and potential to go to post-secondary was the catalyst for getting these awards started.

“We are committed to advancing Deaf Education in a way that allows for meaningful, relevant, and appropriate education to be fully accessible to our DHH learners.”

In 2010, the DHH Program Development Team of Ivy Fraser-Planicka and Tracey Wilkinson-Steel, led by Elizabeth Croft and Steve Young, engaged the Queen Elizabeth High School Parent Booster Association and Queen Elizabeth High School who then provided the founding support for three new scholarships and a program grant all in support of DHH learners.

Two scholarships will assist DHH students in pursuing further education at a recognized Deaf University. A third scholarship is open to any QEHS student whose post-secondary study is directly related to an area of service or support for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population. The fund will annually provide a grant to enable the DHH program to pursue specialized training, workshops, projects, and initiatives for current year students in the area of Deaf Cultural studies, language and literacy development, and achievement of DHH program outcomes.

You, too, can support Queen Elizabeth student scholarships. Every donation makes a difference! All gifts will receive a charitable tax receipt from EducationMatters and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped one of Calgary’s youth move a step closer to achieving their potential.
