Create a world of possibility for kids and youth with neuromuscular disorders

Holland Bloorview’s Dr. Doug Biggar has worked tirelessly to extend the lives of boys who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and improve the quality of life of kids with neuromuscular disorders.

About DMD - DMD is a recessive disorder that affects one in 3,500 boys. Those who have it exhibit a progressive loss of muscle function. When Dr. Biggar began his work on this disorder more than 15 years ago, boys did not live past the age of 20. Having pioneered the use of the steroid, deflaxacort, Dr. Biggar’s patients are now living into adulthood.

This presents a new challenge - How to improve their quality of life as they get older?

You can help Dr. Biggar and his colleagues develop programs to help youth with neuromuscular disorders accomplish their goals and live their dreams.

The Biggar Endowment- Friends of Dr. Biggar have established The Biggar Endowment. These friends include the David and Anne Ward, Mary Elizabeth Flynn and Robert Armstrong who together contributed $550,500 to kick off the $1 million Endowment. Having supported Dr. Biggar for so many years, these friends have witnessed first hand the impact of Dr. Biggar’s work on so many kids and youth who have neuromuscular disorders.  Since then, the League of Ordinary Gentlemen donated proceeds from a concert called Music Heals to the Endowment, and families have given in memory of loved ones to ensure that young people with muscular dystrophy lead unlimited lives. With their generous support, we are almost at 75 percent to reaching our $1 million goal!

Dr. Biggar will be actively involved in the early years of the Endowment through a project called MDLife. This project will fund a researcher to focus part of their work on developing innovative programs to meet the needs of youth with muscular dystrophy – such as finding meaningful work and leading active social lives.

Every contribution makes a difference – Pay tribute to Dr. Biggar’s long commitment to kids with disabilities. Today, you can help kids and youth with neuromuscular disorders lead unlimited lives.
