Tribute to Alexis Wronzberg

Since 2006 Imagine a Cure for Leukemia has focused on raising money to fund promising medical research with the goal of eradicating this disease. However, we never lose sight of the fact that Leukemia continues to take the precious lives of adults and children, and leaves a trail of painful memories among surviving family and friends.
Alexis Wronzberg was only 21 years old when she was diagnosed with an acute form of leukemia. She quickly went into remission and stayed there for the next five years.
On her 26th birthday Alexis relapsed. Her only option was a stem cell transplant, but the doctors first had to get the disease back into remission. This was done over a four month period using very toxic chemotherapy.
The transplant went smoothly and Alexis recovered well. But the benefit was short lived. Soon after, the disease returned and there were no other options for her in Canada. However, Alexis belonged to loving and caring family that simply refused to give up. Their research uncovered an experimental procedure developed by a world renowned Israeli research doctor. He agreed to take on Alexis as a patient.
With treatment cost of $300,000 the family had an immediate need for money. They reached out to the community and touched the hearts of many people with the story of their charismatic and accomplished daughter. A grass roots campaign emerged and within 7 days there were enough funds to send Alexis to Israel.
Lex went there filled with hope. She received the experimental transplant using stem cells donated by her mother. Remission was achieved and fully sustained in spite of the damage from previous treatments. Unfortunately though, her immune system had been too severely compromised, and Alexis died on Dec. 29, 2010.
Alexis adored her family and had an army of loving friends. She will always be remembered for a smile that lit up the room and an ability to make everyone she knew feel special.
Alexis Wronzberg was a bright light that went out far too soon . . . and she is missed by many.
